This morning I went for my workout at the pool. I try to swim at least once a week, besides running and lifting at the fitness center. One thing I like about the swimming is it gives me the opportunity to ponder, to let my mind meander. When I am at the fitness center there are six TV sets running in front of the eliptical trainer and music playing all the time, even when I am lifting out of sight of those TV sets. When I am in the pool there is only the water, God, and me (perhaps an occassional swimmer in the next lane comes into view).
This pool time allows me to think about my week, day, or any concerns I may have. I am not distracted with other visuals, sounds, or intrusions. I think it is really hard in the Bay Area to find a place that doesn't have some kind of distraction, be it self-imposed or not. The pondering allows me to listen more closer to the Master of my life. It of course doesn't mean I always follow those words or promptings I receive, but at least I can hear them without outside interference.
Where do you have the opportunity to listen, ponder, or meander with God? Maybe you don't have a pool to dive into, but what about the shower? Maybe when you are driving you could turn off the CD player or the radio. Maybe you just need to talk a walk on the local trail without ear buds. It is great to know that God will be there whereever you are the only thing we need to remember is we need to be listening and make his presence our focus if even for only 36 laps, about a half a mile.
Blessings on your meanderings,
Pastor Randy
