In reading an excerpt from Dietrich Bonhoeffer's book Ethics he suggests that even if we do something that we preceive is good, for ourselves or for the "greater good" of the community, we need to be sure it is in alignment with God's will. The ultimate reality is God's will not whether it is "good" or not. Out view of the universe is so limited that we can't really know if something will be good or not, for others or for the universe.
It we admit that we are not the authors of goodness then we can seek God's will for all our actions, which we can verify through scripture, confirmation from other respected Christians, and the movement of the Spirit in our hearts (or some would say according to our conscience).
God is the Creator, Reconciler, and Redeemer, so God is the one who is best to determine whether what we do is needed or not. This means we need to be listening to God through our bible reading, our conversation with other Christians, and through the inspiration we have from the Spirit.
Let's try to hear God's voice instead of our own. That is what is most good.
Peace,
Pastor Randy
