This morning I was in the mood for some classical music, which is different than the music I listened to with our Youth and Children's Director yesterday (you know, "God Is Good" or excerpts from the "Lion King"). Our radio isn't that great, in fact we use it mostly as a CD player for books on tape, but I found out if I laid it on its back (do radios have a back?) then the reception was great.
I was enjoying the music while I was making my breakfast of oatmeal, dried cranberries, and raw almonds, when I opened the fridge to get the yogurt, which I like on my oatmeal as well, and all of a sudden the static was very annoying. I had finally found the best way to get a clear radio signal, but opening the door of the refrigerator interrupted the music.
This made me think about my daily devotional reading. I have a place to go to, but even there I have distractions. Sometimes I have to really focus on the reading and place the other thoughts on hold, otherwise I end up dealing with those distractions and can't take in what I am reading. It is true sometimes the new thoughts are related and should be dealt with, but I think most the time it is just a lack of concentration.
Where do you do your reading? Do you intentionally seek to focus on the reading and God's words to you or are you thinking about your schedule or your struggles from yesterday or your plans for tomorrow? I have mentioned before I am not real good at the daily reading, but even if I was, I think it is probably better to have undistracted time every third day than daily distraction time.
Today I was able to enjoy the classical music. Today I was able to focus on the reading, and today I feel refreshed and ready for the rest of the day.
Hoping you can take the time to focus on your reading, but always with an ear to God's interruption.
Peace,
Pastor Randy
