This morning as I got ready to leave for work I did some of my household chores. I wiped down the shower walls and fixtures in the bath tub, I fed the cat, and I made the bed. Other than feeding the cat before I was married I didn’t do any of these things. I mean why make the bed you just are going to mess it up again in another few hours, well sixteen to eighteen anyway. Wiping down the shower walls was not even something I did as a youngster when I lived at home. Yet doing these things are a good discipline. They help me to follow a schedule and help make me look like I am organized.
I find that even if someone else is going to take a shower after me I still make myself, most of the time, wipe down the walls. It is not my first choice for things to do when it is cold in the bathroom, even after the steam of the shower has raised the room a few degrees, but it is a good discipline.
This is how growth in our faith works. There are certain things we need to do even if they are not convenient or they take more time that we currently want to give. Things like praying, or reading the bible or a daily devotional, or sometimes even attending church. As we do these things we grow in our relationship with God. It is something that takes some time and work.
Just like keeping the shower walls clean so mold doesn’t grow on it, at least as quickly, the discipline makes for a more attractive and cleaner environment. So, spending time with God makes for a closer relationship with God and a more fulfilling life.
The reason I make the bed, by the way is because my spouse likes it that way. Sometimes our love for another has to overpower our reason, because other than looking nice I just don’t feel more fulfilled with a made bed before I get in to it.
So take time this week to start a discipline of spending time with God. It may seem inconvenient. It may seem not real beneficial at first, but believe me the dividends are out of this world.
Growing with you,
Pastor Randy
