It is getting easier! When we pulled up to the McDonald's I noticed the older woman sitting in her '96 Chrysler. She seemed to be taking her time deciding when to come in to the store. After we got our food and sat down I noticed she made her appearance in front of the cashier. I heard him say, "Sorry we don't take checks only cash and cards." I thought she might need some help paying for her meal, but then I saw her waiting in the line for her food. I next noticed her when she struggled carrying her oversized handbag, paper bag of food, and cup carrier to the fountain drink machine with an empty cup and two ice cream sundaes.
After she got her drink and started to gather her things together I got up and asked her if she would like some help to her car.
She smiled and said, "That would be great." I followed her out to the car and after she put her handbag and dinner bag in the car she asked if I was waiting for my order. I told her no, that I had just been eating dinner with my family and thought she might like some help. She thanked me again and took the cup holder.
As I returned to our table I was reminded how easy it is to help others in need. We just need to recognize the opportunities. I did not do anything extraordinary. I just noticed someone who needed a little help.
Each time I am able to notice someone who is in need and I help them it gets easier to help the next person. I don't always notice those opportunities around me, but I think we all have those opportunities. We just need to recognize them, whether it is helping someone take something off the grocery store shelf, picking up a dropped pacifier, or even pointing out an open gas pump. We need to have the eyes of Jesus to see those opportunities that help us show people what it is like to live in the Kingdom of God on a daily basis.
Seeking to live in the Kingdom with you,
